Start with G for German - that's just the standard abbreviation. Then RING gives you a band (as in jewellery, not a music group), and O is love, that zero you get in tennis. String G, RING and O together and you've got the word for Foreigner, but not in a nice way, which is the definition here - gringo being a somewhat derogatory term.
