How the clue works
Walkman is the definition, since a personal stereo is exactly that sort of device. The wordplay is an anagram (signalled by "playing") of the letters in SPOONER RELATES, which rearrange perfectly into PERSONAL STEREO — a lovely surface that cheekily uses Spooner too.
